Old Vines Zinfandel, My Father's Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley (2013)
“This is a stunner to drink over the next decade,” said Robert Parker who gave it 95 Points. This old-vine Zinfandel offers aromas of fresh-picked berries with bright flavors of cranberry chutney and raspberry. A nicely structured Zinfandel with notes of warm baking spices and a “long, lush finish.”
The Standley Vineyard, aka My Father’s Vineyard, is named after the owner’s father, who first saw the promise of this incredible vineyard site in the mid 1900s. Located in the heart of Dry Creek Valley, the vineyard captures the essence of this top Zinfandel-growing region. Head-pruned vines are planted along the hillsides overlooking Dry Creek and Lake Sonoma. Well-drained, red soil along with cooling fog from the Pacific Ocean create perfect growing conditions leading to highly concentrated, intense fruit.
High quality, outstanding fruit characteristics and generous yields describe the 2013 harvest. Harvest started slightly earlier than previous years after an ideal growing season that provided optimum temperatures for grapes to ripen. We had a wealth of sunshine and consistently warm days and cool nights, allowing the fruit ample time to develop full, rich flavors with great color and balance.
The grapes are hand-sorted and undergo a five-day cold soak before fermentation to extract optimal color and aromas. After primary fermentation, the wine is pumped into 100% French oak barrels, where it undergoes natural malolactic fermentation, followed by 16 months of aging.
